Colour is a crucial attribute in packaging, influencing consumer choice. It can be achieved through synthetic or natural pigments, which differ in performance, cost and usage opportunities. Synthetic pigments offer high chroma and high stability but are increasingly controversial due to their toxicity and environmental impact. To find a solution, packaging companies are shifting toward natural pigments. However, natural pigments face challenges such as limited shades, poor lightfastness and thermal resistance. An innovative technology inspired by the Mayan civilization provides a solution : the protection of organic coloring molecules through controlled natural encapsulation. This innovation enables the production of up to 100% natural pigments with numerous advantages : a wide range of colors, improved resistance to external aggressions (UV, chemical, thermal, etc.) and dispersibility in various media (water, oils, polymers, solvents, etc.). Tested in various polymers and subjected to UV tests, these pigments could be the key to coloring the packaging of tomorrow.
