Exclusive | Beyond Whipped Cream: Budé’s journey to transform the aerosol industry with innovative CO₂ technology

Budé is redefining aerosols with its pioneering CO₂ shaking technology, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional propellants. Starting with whipped cream aerosols, they’ve grown into industry leaders and are set to unveil their latest innovations at Paris Packaging Week 2025.

Tell us a bit about Budé?

Budé is a family-owned business founded 40 years ago by Rob Budé’s father, specialising in developing prototype equipment primarily for process automation. Twenty years ago, we received a request from a major dairy company in the Netherlands to create a machine for manufacturing whipped cream aerosols using our innovative shaking technology. This marked our entry into the aerosol industry. Today, with over 20 high-speed whipped cream lines operating across Europe and North America, we have established a leading position in this niche segment of the aerosol market. Two years ago, we strategically focused our resources on the aerosol industry, promoting our proven shaking technology and our prototyping capabilities. We also formed a partnership with MBC Aerosols, a US-based supplier of aerosol production equipment. Looking ahead, we are excited to explore new opportunities for innovation and growth within the aerosol sector.

Why is it important for you to attend and exhibit at Paris Packaging Week 2025?

Budé is well known in the whipped cream aerosol industry, but outside of this small segment, Budé is unknown, and the shaking technology is not clearly understood. We participated in the 2024 edition of the ADF which was a success for which reason we will again attend the 2025 edition, now with the intent to strengthen our position as a serious, dedicated, and capable supplier of aerosol production equipment while at the same bringing our shaking technology under the attention of the many industry experts that will be attending.

Will you be showcasing any new products, services or materials at Paris Packaging Week 2025? If yes, what?

The shaking technology we offer is not new to us with 20 years of experience but still is unknown and not clearly understood by a significant part of the industry. Next to our shaking technology, we will present our gas pressure tester based on the squeezing technology.

Give us a short introduction to your innovation

The shaking technology utilises the “Time-Over-Pressure” gassing approach. During the gassing process, we shake the can as a result of which the gas (typically CO2) is dissolved in the liquid. The amount of gas in the can multiplies, resulting in an aerosol that does not use flammable butane/propane mixtures and meets or exceeds the performance expectations. During the ADF I will present in more detail the secrets of our shaking technology which we feel is instrumental for the future of CO2 as the propellant of choice.

Our squeezing technology is based on the concept that the distance a can side wall can be squeezed, is a measure of the pressure inside the can. The main advantage is that it is quick, easy, and can be used for high-speed (300cpm) lines offering a 100% quality check. The technology is precise with around 0.5 bar accuracy, is proven for many years in most of our whipped cream lines, and now offered as a stand-alone unit.

How sustainable and/or innovative is the pack?

CO2, in combination with the shaking technology, offers a sustainable alternative to the widely used volatile propellants which are expected by many players in the aerosol industry to become topic of environmental discussion.

What technical challenges did you need to overcome to manufacture this pack, if any?

Changing the propellant can be complex, as it often necessitates adjustments to formulations, valve designs, and diffuser specifications, which may also impact the overall customer experience. Despite these challenges, we believe the benefits of transitioning to a more sustainable propellant are substantial enough to justify the effort required to address these issues.

What reactions have you had from clients?

The reactions where very positive and in general the results exceeded expectations. We have explored various applications including food-sprays, brake-cleaners, lubricants, haircare products, insect sprays, air fresheners and even paints. All these products are now using other propellants and we strongly believe in the potential of CO2 as the propellant of the future.
