Established in 2004, Licorera Cihuatán is a craft distillery based in El Salvador, and a division of one of this country’s most diversified sugar mills, with almost a century’s experience in the mastering of sugarcane. Cihuatán Sahumerio was created as a celebration of love, inspired by the distillery’s enchanting Mayan heritage.
According to Mayan lore, fire was the symbol of love and the eagle goddess Chantico was its guardian. Every loving home would keep a “Sahumerio”, a sacred vessel for fire, these would burn day and night in honour of love and Chantico.
The illustration at the heart of every bottle shows this goddess in all her glory. Every bottle comes hand-numbered, to further highlight its exclusivity. Flowers and candles that would be burned during the Sahumerio ritual inspired the colour palette of the packaging. The high-level of technicity of the label and folding carton really bring this beautiful story to life at a glance.
The label is composed of subtle gold gradations, satin varnish and glossy flames, all highlighted by the precise embossing and delicate cutting. The folding carton is a condensed technicality serving graphics: 10-colour printing, matt/glossy effects and embossing on the “goddess”: the masterpiece of this artwork.
