Mondin targets luxury packaging with Nisiar leather-like material

French start-up Mondin is targeting the luxury packaging market with Nisiar, an alternative to leather made with grape marc. Swiss watchmaker ID Genève has already adopted the material for a limited-edition watch strap.

While the market has seen an explosion in the development of so-called sustainable leather alternatives in recent years, French company Mondin is aiming to stand out with Nisiar. Made partially of grape marc, the material requires neither a coating nor a textile backing.

Today, the majority of leather alternatives use textile backings,” Julien Houssiaux, Co-Founder of Mondin along with Rodolphe Mondin in 2021, tells Formes de Luxe. This has its advantages, notably in terms of suppleness, but there is a risk of the backing peeling away from the material over time. “We wanted to take a different approach and propose a material in a single sheet, making it more adapted to the luxury market,” Houssiaux explains.
