Burgundy wines: Towards a drastic reduction in carbon footprint thanks to lighter bottles

At a BIVB round table, three Burgundy operators described their approach to making bottles lighter and improving their carbon footprint.

They discussed the adaptations required, the risks of breakage and customer feedback, with generally positive results.

The BIVB’s ‘Objectif Climat’ plan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 60% by 2035. By switching to 400g bottles containing 80% recycled glass, the industry could already reduce its carbon footprint by more than 20%. This initiative marks a crucial first step towards more sustainable winegrowing.
