PPWR deal limits single-use plastics, mandates DRS, and enables consumer reuse
The European Parliament and the Council presidency have tentatively agreed on the proposal for the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation.
In the agreement, the majority of sustainability standards for packaging in the EU market have been maintained, aligning with the main objectives set by the Commission. For instance, the directives regarding minimum recycled content in plastic packaging by 2030 and 2040 remain unchanged.
However, an exemption has been introduced for compostable plastic packaging and those containing less than 5% of plastic components by total weight of the packaging. To reduce the amount of unnecessary packaging, a maximum empty space ratio of 50% will be introduced for grouped, transport, and e-commerce packaging.
