Design case study | Studio Minerva’s bottle design for Andrés Brugal
Tell us a bit about the brand – its heritage, its story, and its markets – and the brief for this project. How does the design express the brand’s values? What inspired the design?
Studio Minerva’s bottle and outer design for Andrés Brugal is a celebration of the founder’s spirit of exploration and five generations of Maestros Roneros who travelled the globe to share the passion, warmth, and joy of Brugal’s liquid artistry. As their rums were their greatest treasure, the Maestros conceived a way to safely transport their precious liquid and proudly display it upon arrival. This release pays homage to those iconic voyages with a wooden travel case which houses a stunning, hand-blown crystal cut decanter.
The brief was to create an exclusive prestige release in the Brugal portfolio, limited to no more than 500 bottles, delivered through a showstopping decanter & outer packaging that details the story of Andrés Brugal’s Journey of Excellence.
What is innovative or unusual about the pack?
This pack is innovative due to: the diagonal way the box opens, the internal structure holding the component for shipping but also acting as a plinth glorifier, and lastly, the hidden details on the pack eg. N, S, E W, on the base of the bottle.
What technical challenges did you need to overcome to manufacture this pack?
To be able to manufacture this product, we had to overcome the diagonal way the box opens, specifically making sure the doors open flat as a display once open. We also had to ensure the weight was not too heavy once all components were included, that the colours matched across different materials, and lastly, being able to develop a metal collar that met the design intention and technical requirements.
The launch of Andrés Brugal in October 2022 was extremely well received & fully sold out when released.
